Thallus squamulose, 2–7 cm wide. Squamules 0.2–0.6 mm wide, adnate, discrete or contiguous, convex, each usually with a central c. 0.1–0.2 mm wide depression, dark greenish brown to chocolate-brown or dark brown, ±glossy. Soredia and isidia absent. Upper cortex 25–40 μm thick, including an epinecral layer to 15 μm thick. Apothecia common, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, arising in the depressions, ±plane when immature, but becoming strongly convex and hemispherical; disc dark reddish brown, epruinose, egyrose, immarginate. Proper exciple colourless to pale brown. Epihymenium brown. Hypothecium colourless. Ascospores narrowly fusiform, simple, rarely 1- or 3-septate, 6–10 × 1.5–2.5 μm. Pycnidia c. 0.1 mm wide, sessile, laminal on the squamules, but not in the depressions. Conidia filiform, arcuate, 7–16 × c. 1 μm. CHEMISTRY: Cortex and soralia K–, C–, KC–, P–, UV–; medulla K–, C–, KC+ purple, P–, UV+ blue-white; containing colensoic acid (major), 4-O-methylphysodic acid (major), physodic acid (minor), norcolensoic acid (minor), 4-O-methyllividic acid (minor), perlatolic acid (minor). |

This common, endemic species occurs in all States and the A.C.T.; grows on charred wood and bark and, more rarely, on decorticated wood. | ||
