| Thallus squamulose, to 10 cm wide. Squamules 0.3–0.8 mm wide, adnate, not proliferating, plane to moderately convex, white, off-white, pale olive-green to yellow-brown; isidia absent. Soralia marginal, initially pustulate, then spreading along margins and ±over the upper surface; soredia copious, white to pale yellow-grey, granular, 40–75 μm wide. Upper cortex 25–40 μm thick, including an epinecral layer to 15 μm thick. Apothecia common, 0.4–1.5 mm wide, attached to margins of squamules or directly to the substratum, ±plane; disc black, epruinose or faintly bluish white-pruinose, egyrose; margin persistent, becoming somewhat flexuose, concolorous with or partly paler than the disc, ±bluish white-pruinose. Proper exciple colourless within, with a green rim. Epihymenium brownish green. Hypothecium pale to mid-brown. Mature asci very rare. Ascospores simple, ellipsoidal, 6–8 × 2.5–3.0 μm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex and medulla K–, C+ red, KC+ red, P–; containing lecanoric acid (major), ±orsellinic acid (trace). |
