Thallus greenish to olive-grey or pale orange, thin; soredia and isidia absent. Apothecia common, scattered, round to somewhat distorted, sessile, constricted at the base, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; disc dark rust-red to blackberry-red, ±plane; margin prominent, smooth, dark rust-red or sometimes slightly paler than the disc; disc and margin K+ blue-violet (appearing black under the microscope); proper exciple of hyaline radiating agglutinated hyphae, the outer layer encrusted with red anthraquinone crystals, the crystals penetrating deep within the exciple, the inner layer colourless and lacking crystals. Epihymenium encrusted with red anthraquinone crystals, K+ blue or blue-violet. Hymenium not inspersed, colourless, 80–100 μm thick; hypothecium colourless to yellow. Asci usually 2-spored, rarely 3- or 4-spored, 65–85 × 16–23 μm. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, densely muriform, 32–50 × 16–20 μm. Conidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecia K+ blue-violet; thallus containing ±fragilin (minor), ±parietin (minor), ±7-chloroemodin (trace), ±7-chloroemodinal (trace), ±7-chloroparietinic acid (trace), fragilin bisanthrone (minor), ±physcoin bisanthrone (trace); apothecia containing ±fragilin (minor), ±parietin (minor), fragilin bisanthrone (minor), ±physcoin bisanthrone (trace), exuviatic acid B (minor), unknowns (major or minor). |
