Thallus thin, ±brittle, lobate, orbicular to irregularly spreading, 1–5 (–10) cm wide. Lobes ±appressed, unorientated centrally, contiguous or ±imbricate; fertile lobes ±ascending and reflexed at the apices, 3–8 mm wide, 3–12 mm long; margins entire, indented-sinuous or occasionally irregularly incised. Upper surface dark grey or pale grey-brown (shaded habitats), ±suffused red-brown or brown when dry, or blue-black when wet (exposed sites), smooth or ±ridged-faveolate, especially towards the margins, phyllidiate. Phyllidia sparse to abundant, terete, nodulose, c. 0.5 mm tall and 0.2 mm thick, or forming ±flattened squamules to 1 mm diam., scattered over the upper surface, solitary or in groups, eventually ±confluent. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface dark brown to black, wrinkled, matt or glossy, usually glabrous, less commonly finely pubescent or finely scabrid, not tomentose. Apothecia common, on short ascending to frequently reflexed lobes, with discs ±parallel to the substratum, subrotund to reniform, 3–5 mm diam., with thin phyllidiate-denticulate margins; dorsal surface smooth to wrinkled, becoming ±faveolate; disc red-brown. Ascospores 3-septate, (10.0–) 12.6–17.7 × 5.0–7.6 µm, hyaline to pale brown. Pycnidia not seen in Australian specimens; reported as infrequent, brown-black, marginal and semi-immersed (White & James, 1988). CHEMISTRY: Hopane-15α, 22-diol (major), ±15α-acetoxyhopane-22-ol (minor or trace), ±methyl-leprolomin, iso-O-methylleprolomin, exuviatic acids A, B and C (minor or trace). |
