Thallus irregularly spreading, to 8 cm wide. Lobes plane to somewhat concave, sublinear, often overlapping at the margins, to 4 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, irregularly branched; margins undulate, somewhat upturned, at times deflexed at the apices, entire to phyllidiate-incised; phyllidia developing from thickened brown initials, restricted to the margins. Upper surface olive-brown to reddish brown when dry, with or without a blue-grey hue, dull, smooth to longitudinally wrinkled or bullate, tomentose. Tomentum thin to woolly at the apices, occasionally thinly spreading, the central parts ±glabrous. Lower surface whitish, tomentose. Veins flattened to raised, 0.3–0.8 mm wide, whitish to pale buff at the margins to brownish in the centre, anastomosing, erect-tomentose; interstices large, polygonal to irregularly elongate, whitish or pale. Rhizines simple to fasciculate or fibrillose, whitish or pale buff at the margins to brown centrally, erect-tomentose, often tufted at the tips, 2–5 mm long. Apothecia uncommon, at tips of shortly divided lobes, 2.5–5.0 mm wide, saddle-shaped; disc concave, dull reddish brown, with a pale lacerate margin. Ascospores few, elongate-fusiform, often slightly thickened at one end, 5–7-septate, 40–50 × 2.5–5.0 µm, hyaline. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: No substances detected by TLC. |

Uncommon in Vic. and Tas.; grows on and among mosses over bark and soil in sheltered habitats and disturbed, dry-sclerophyll forest to 1010 m altitude. Also in Central and South America. | ||
