Thallus irregularly spreading, to 6 cm wide, fragile when dry. Lobes plane to concave, sublinear, irregularly branched, often crowded and overlapping, to 3 cm long, 4–15 mm wide; margins upturned, entire to irregularly notched, the apices ±inrolled. Upper surface grey-brown to olive-brown or reddish brown when dry; margins darker grey-brown and ±glossy, longitudinally wrinkled or bullate, occasionally cracked, tomentose or becoming smooth and dull. Tomentum ±thick at the apices, becoming thinner on the upper surface, or absent. Lower surface white or pale buff. Veins anastomosing, pale buff at margins, becoming dark brown centrally, slightly raised, c. 0.5 mm wide, flattened arachnoid-tomentose; interstices broadly polygonal, with a woolly-arachnoid tomentum. Rhizines pale buff to dark brown, simple to confluent and ±tufted, to 5 mm long, covered with fine tomentum at the margins, becoming fasciculate centrally, often matted and tangled, with or without a small apical tuft. Apothecia on elongate slightly upturned lobes, saddle-shaped, to 4 mm wide; disc dark red-brown; margin pale, lacerate, occasionally with small phyllidium-like outgrowths. Ascospores acicular, 5–7-septate, 48–65 × 2.5–3.0 (–4.0) µm, hyaline. Pycnidia not seen in Australian specimens. CHEMISTRY: Faint traces of two unidentified substances with high Rf (c. 80 and 85). |

Uncommon in Vic. and Tas., on soil and rocks in wet-sclerophyll forest and rainforest, often growing over mosses, at altitudes of 170–1270 m. Previously known with certainty only from Subantarctic Macquarie Is. where it was reported as being common on soil over decaying grasses, mosses and hepatics (Dodge & Rudolph, 1955). | ||
