| Thallus ±orbicular to irregularly spreading, thin but robust, 2–6 (–10) cm diam. Lobes plane to concave, sublinear, often crowded and overlapping, to 4.5 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, irregularly branched; margins upright, at times deflexed at apices, mostly entire, slightly undulate. Upper surface pale brown to tan, or with a ±blue-grey hue when dry, smooth, dull, covered with pale flattened tomentum; soralia submarginal, 2–4 mm wide, bluish grey, with brownish margins, initially erupting as small spots, becoming rounded to elongate and eventually confluent; soredia granular, bluish grey. Lower surface pale yellow-buff to greyish or brownish, coarsely tomentose. Veins flattened, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, pale buff to dark brown towards the centre; interstices irregular, cream or pale yellow-buff. Rhizines 1–4 mm long, pale to dark brown, ±fasciculate near the margins, becoming richly branched to fibrillose and anastomosed towards the centre and forming a dense spongy carpet. Apothecia not seen in Australian specimens; reported as 4.5–6.0 mm wide and saddle-shaped, with ascospores acicular, 3-septate, 35–65 × 3–4 µm (Goffinet & Hastings, 1995). CHEMISTRY: Cortex and non-exposed medulla lacking lichen substances; soralia containing ±methyl gyrophorate (major), ±gyrophoric acid (minor or trace), ±unknown substances (traces). |

| Uncommon in N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; grows on soil and among mosses on rock ledges and on moist rocks, on moist soil banks along roadsides and at rainforest margins, and on boulders in dry-sclerophyll forest, at altitudes above 1200 m. Also in Central Africa. | ||
