| Thallus deep orange to yellow-orange or orange-brown, sometimes paler on the underside of the branches on which they grow, continuous, thick, unevenly warty-bullate, to 5 cm wide, not delimited by a prothallus; isidia, granules and soredia absent. Photobiont cells 10–15 µm wide. Apothecia sessile, ±constricted at the base, irregularly roundish or auriculate, scattered or crowded, 0.5–1.0 mm wide; disc orange to red, concave to ±plane, epruinose, dull or glossy; margin distinct, usually paler than the disc, glossy, persistent. Exciple 50–75 µm thick, inspersed with orange-red granules, more densely so on the outer side, K+ reddish purple. Epihymenium c. 10 µm thick, inspersed with orange to red granules, K+ reddish purple. Hymenium 50–75 µm thick, more densely orange pigmented in the upper part, K+ reddish purple. Hypothecium 60–100 µm thick, colourless or pale yellow, K–; subhypothecium 40–50 µm thick, colourless, K–. Paraphyses simple or occasionally branched, rather robust, 2–3 µm thick; apices tapered or rounded, not noticeably swollen. Asci 25–40 × 6–9 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 8–11 × 3–4 μm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecia K+ purple; containing thuringione (major), arthothelin (minor), 4,5-dichloro-3-O-methylnorlichexanthone (trace), russulone (submajor), norussulone (submajor), haematommone (trace). |
