Thallus endophloeodal, not apparent. Photobiont cells 10–12 µm wide, concentrated near the base of apothecia. Apothecia sessile, round or irregularly angular and deformed by mutual pressure, to 1.5 mm wide, occasionally regenerating over pale brown to ±translucent aborted apothecia; disc jet-black, matt to glossy, plane, becoming undulate to convex in very old apothecia; margin thin, occasionally flexuose, persistent, glossy and concolorous with the disc at the upper edge; outer edge sometimes ±brownish. Exciple similarly coloured at outer edge, pale orange within, K–. Epihymenium 8–12 µm thick, dark orange-brown to olive-brown, K+ pale dingy greyish brown. Hymenium 32–50 µm thick, pale orange-brown to olive-brown, K–. Hypothecium 60–80 µm thick, colourless to pale orange-brown, K–; subhypothecium colourless to pale orange-brown, K–, except for a K+ vivid purple central band (often containing dark brown angular granules toc.8 µm wide). Paraphyses conglutinated, sparingly branched and anastomosing, 1–2 µm thick, regularly tapered; apices colourless, not swollen. Asci 25–40 × 9–12 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 7.5–12.0 × 2.5–5.0 µm, usually with 1–3 plasma bridges. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Subhypothecial granules, K+ purple; containing hypothamnolic acid. |
