  Thallus pale tan, composed of scattered or contiguous convex areolae c.0.25 mm wide, to 0.1 mm thick, often visible only around the apothecia, lacking isidia and soredia. Photobiont cells 10–15 µm wide. Apothecia sessile, round or irregularly rounded, to 1.5 (–2.0) mm wide; disc jet-black, matt to glossy, initially plane, then undulate and convex; margin thin, ±translucent brownish when very young, soon black and glossy, occasionally flexuose, persistent or becoming excluded in old apothecia. Exciple similarly coloured. Epihymenium 8–10 µm thick, olive-brown to deep golden brown, K– or K+ pale dingy brown. Hymenium 35–50 µm thick, colourless to pale yellow-brown, K–. Hypothecium 50–90 µm thick, colourless to pale yellow-brown, K–; subhypothecium golden brown, K+ intense yellow. Paraphyses conglutinated, sparingly branched, septate, with short irregularly swollen cells to 5 µm wide, with large conspicuous vacuoles containing oil; apices colourless, not swollen. Asci 30–40 × 12–16 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 7–12 × 2.5–5.0 µm, occasionally with plasma bridges. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus and subhypothecium, K+ intense yellow; containing thamnolic acid.
     
  Endemic and scattered in W.A., N.S.W., A.C.T. and Tas. Recorded only from decorticated Eucalyptus wood in habitats identical to those of R. stuartii, although mainly at subalpine elevations.
