Thallus crustose, continuous or becoming rimose, areolate and rugulose with age, usually white, rarely pale grey, to 10 cm wide, 0.10–0.15 mm thick. Areolae angular to irregular, 0.3–1.0 mm wide, plane and smooth to weakly convex, lacking isidia and soredia. Prothallus black or not apparent. Apothecia common, scattered, sessile, constricted at the base, 1.0–2.5 mm wide; disc plane or ±undulate, round or irregular, glossy black, epruinose; thalline exciple prominent, persistent, smooth; proper exciple colourless, 100–200 µm thick. Epihymenium dark violet-brown. Hymenium violet to purple-brown, 150–200 µm thick. Hypothecium orange-brown to yellow-brown, 75–100 µm thick. Ascospores simple, broadly ellipsoidal to subglobose, 8–12 × 6.0–8.5 µm. Conidia filiform, straight, 8–12 × c. 1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K+ yellow, C–, KC–, P– or P+ pale yellow; medulla K–, C–, KC+ pink, P–, UV+ blue-white; containing atranorin (minor), physodic acid (major), ±norcolensoic acid (trace), ±2’-O-methylphysodic acid (trace). |
