Thallus mainly endophloeodal to thinly epiphloeodal, to c. 100 µm thick, pale yellowish grey to pale greyish green, dull, usually uneven, continuous, non-rimose. Cortical structures absent, or the thallus with a discontinuous protocortex to 15 µm thick. Algal layer well developed, continuous or discontinuous; calcium oxalate crystals abundant, occasionally sparse, small to large, scattered or clustered. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata inconspicuous, to 0.6 mm diam., ±rounded, somewhat perithecioid to predominantly apothecioid, ±sessile, solitary to marginally fused, becoming ±distinctly emergent, mostly hemispherical. Disc usually not visible from above, greyish, moderately pruinose. Pores small, to c. 0.3 mm, ±rounded to more often rounded-irregular, the apex of the proper exciple visible from above, completely free, off-white, often shrunken, usually incurved, rarely somewhat erect. Thalline rim margin ±rounded to irregular, usually rather small, entire to slightly split, thin to thick, incurved, concolorous with the thallus, rarely paler. Proper exciple ±free, thin to thick, hyaline to pale yellowish internally, yellowish brown marginally, apically often brownish to dark brown or dark grey, occasionally amyloid at the base. Hymenium to c. 200 µm thick, not inspersed, moderately conglutinated; paraphyses parallel or slightly interwoven, unbranched, the tips moderately to markedly thickened; lateral paraphyses often inconspicuous, to c. 20 µm long; columellar structures absent. Epihymenium hyaline, usually with small crystals and fine to coarse greyish granules. Asci 1–4-spored; tholus initially thin, not visible at maturity. Ascospores muriform, ellipsoidal to fusiform, very rarely ±clavate, with narrowly rounded ends, becoming brown, non-amyloid, very faintly amyloid when immature, 40–90 (–100) × 15–30 µm, with c. 14–26 × 2–8 locules; locules mostly ±rounded to slightly angular, subglobular to somewhat oblong; transverse septa thin, distinct, regular; ascospore wall and endospore thin; wall non-halonate. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C–, P–; no secondary compounds detectable by TLC. |
