Australian Plant Image Index
The Australian Plant Image Index manages the photograph collection and illustration archive for the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research and the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
It is managed for the CANBR within the administrative structure of the Australian National Botanic Gardens and is located on the Gardens' site.
The collection contains about 48,000 35mm slides, mostly Kodachrome, of portraits, habit and habitat of Australian plants, both in the wild and in cultivation. Since 2006, most additions to the collection have been born-digital images from digital cameras. Most of these photos are vouchered to specimens in the Australian National Herbarium or through lineages of living plants back to such an original voucher within the Herbarium.
The aim of the Index is to include a photo of every native and naturalised plant species in Australia.
The Index is also in the process of cataloging and digitising line art produced as part of botanical taxonomic research or publishing projects within the Botanic Gardens or the Herbarium.
Access to the web interface of the collection database is:

Most illustrations are not yet on line.
Photos from the collection are commercially licenced for publication.
Copyright of the images may be retained by the photographer, by the Director of National Parks (prior to 1993) or since 1993 the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research.
