Australian National Herbarium (HC) & Australian National Botanic Gardens
Labelling plants in the Botanic Gardens
The Plant Records Unit is responsible for labelling the living collections of the Australian National Botanic Gardens based on voucher specimens held in the Australian National Herbarium.
This Unit is managed within the administrative structure of the Australian National Botanic Gardens and is located on the Gardens' site. It uses the same database that manages the records of herbarium specimens.
All the plants in the Botanic Gardens are vouchered to specimens in the Herbarium or through lineages of living plants back to such an original voucher. Each garden bed is mapped by hand and the registration number of each plant on the map entered in the IBIS database. Where no wild voucher exists, vouchers are made from the cultivated plant.
The Unit is responsible for updating names on garden labels as new information becomes available through the Australian Plant Name Index and herbarium specimens get curated.
